A few years ago, my mom took a trip to Ireland with 3 of her girlfriends. They had a fabulous time touring the countryside, and along with many souvenirs and pictures she returned with this poster.
I fell in love with the colorful front doors and knew that when I had a home, I wanted it to have a colorful front door.
So, when Andrew and I bought our house, we headed straight to Lowe’s and picked out the perfect shade of purple (my favorite color) for our front door!
When picking out a paint color for your front door, it’s important to keep a few things in mind.
Your front door is one of the first things people notice about your home. Make it welcoming by choosing a cheery color. Red is always a popular choice. A cherry red front door on a white house with black shutters is a classic and timeless combination.
You want to be sure to choose a color that compliments the other features of your home’s exterior. For example, blues usually work well with red brick homes.
I prefer to have the front door a different color from the rest of the exterior. It adds interest to the façade of the house and welcomes you and your guests. The fresh green door on this house is the first thing you notice.
If your door opens to a main room in your home, you may want to think about the colors used in that room. John and Sherry of Young House Love chose a sunny yellow for their front door. The color not only works with the exterior of their house, but it matches the décor in their front rooms as well.
When thinking about your front door color, don’t be afraid to think outside the box. I have not seen too many orange front doors, but paired with grey siding and white trim, it’s a lovely combination. The coordinating flowers and outdoor rug make this space even more inviting.
Adding a contrasting detail is another way to set your front door apart from all of the others on the block.
If you’re having difficulty choosing a color, here is a tip I learned from HGTV’s Carter Oosterhouse:
- Take a picture of your house.
- Print an 8”x10” of the picture.
- Cut out the area for the front door.
- Place different color paint chips in the opening to see which one you like best!
In the end, you are the one walking in the door every day, so have fun, pick a color you love, and add a unique and recognizable feature to your home!
