I shared our family room and dining room makeovers a few months ago. We’ve slowly been making progress on a few of the items on the to-do list as we work to complete the rooms.
In the family room, we added blue pillows to the couch.
The blue compliments the green pillows nicely and ties into the other pieces in the room – like the chair:
the rug:
and the lamps:
Piping the blue pillows in a blue and green zigzag fabric is a small detail, but one that really helps coordinate all of the pieces in the room.
I’ve also been working on the mantel in the family room. I love to collect vases and pitchers, and I look for them whenever I’m in a consignment or antique store. For now, I’ve arranged an assortment of them, along with a few other special items on the mantel.
Andrew’s family has two cottages on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Many of the glass vases I have collected are from our favorite shop on the Shore, The Blue Crow Antique Mall. You know it has to be awesome when they are the “second largest antique mall in Virginia”!
I love the little stone owl
. He was a Christmas present from my mom. And, yes, I took this picture today – that is a fresh hydrangea bloom from our yard!
Our list for the family room:
- Change up and/or add artwork to the photos over the sofa
- Replace our old pillows with blue pillows
- Add crown molding
- Bring in a few other accessories for the mantle and bookshelves
- Find Remember to look for baskets for the console table
In the dining room, there is only one update, but it’s a big one: we added window treatments!
We really wanted to keep our plantation shutters – we have them in both the dining room and the family room – so I worked around them for the window treatments. Because the stencil is so bold, I kept the window treatments simple with a white fabric that has a subtle texture to it. I chose a scallop shape for the valance to reflect the pattern of the stencil.
They add softness to the room and help to balance out the pattern that is on the walls.

I also want to share a quick update on the Chippenham playroom project. The room is being prepped and painted this week!
A big thank you to Duane Wallace of Wallace & Sons for donating his time to help work on the project this week!
I’ll continue to share progress photos of the room with you all. I can’t wait to see this room come together!
